01 / Understand the institution

How to prepare for an ADIA investment interview

ADIA is a global investment institution, not simply a buyout investor. Strong candidates explain how investment ideas fit a long-horizon, multi-asset portfolio, how risks interact and how decisions should be evaluated across market cycles.

MandateLong-term capital stewardship and diversified global investing
FrameworkReference Portfolio, strategic allocation and asset-class mandates
JudgementRisk-adjusted returns, liquidity, governance and portfolio fit

ADIA publicly describes strategic asset allocation as a core driver of long-term results. Its published investment areas include equities, fixed income, private equity, financial alternatives, real estate and infrastructure. Interview emphasis will depend on the specific role.

Important: The questions and cases below are independently developed practice materials based on public information and common institutional investment skills. They are not official or leaked ADIA interview questions, and no specific hiring sequence is guaranteed.

Showing 78 of 78 questions
01What is ADIA’s mandate, and how is it different from a private equity fund?+
Answer framework

ADIA invests on behalf of the Government of Abu Dhabi with a long-term, diversified, multi-asset mandate. Unlike a finite-life buyout fund, it can evaluate portfolio-level risk, liquidity and opportunities across market cycles.

02Why ADIA rather than an investment bank, hedge fund or traditional asset manager?+
Answer framework

Connect patient capital, global diversification, rigorous risk management and intellectually independent investment judgement to a specific role and your experience.

03What is the purpose of ADIA’s Reference Portfolio?+
Answer framework

It calibrates overall risk appetite using publicly traded securities. Strategic Asset Allocation then aims to improve expected return for a similar risk level through broader diversification.

04How does strategic asset allocation differ from tactical asset allocation?+
Answer framework

Strategic allocation sets long-run exposures and risk budgets; tactical tilts respond to nearer-term dislocations without losing sight of long-horizon objectives.

05How would you explain the importance of asset allocation to a non-investor?+
Answer framework

Use a simple example of diversified return drivers and drawdown protection; explain that security selection alone cannot compensate for an unsuitable aggregate risk mix.

06What would you read before an ADIA interview?+
Answer framework

Review ADIA’s investment strategy, latest published review, relevant asset-class pages, governance, and current macro conditions; distinguish official disclosures from outside estimates.

07How would you compare ADIA with QIA and other sovereign investors?+
Answer framework

Compare mandates, public disclosures, investment horizons, governance and asset mix without asserting unverifiable AUM figures or confidential practices.

08What does responsible stewardship mean for a sovereign investor?+
Answer framework

Discuss disciplined capital deployment, governance, liquidity, ethics, diversification and the obligation to consider long-term outcomes.

09What would you do if a compelling deal conflicted with portfolio concentration limits?+
Answer framework

Quantify marginal contribution to risk and return, identify hedges or sizing alternatives and escalate through the applicable mandate and governance process.

10What distinguishes a good investment from a good portfolio addition?+
Answer framework

A standalone high-IRR deal may have poor diversification, high correlation, illiquidity or adverse tail risk; assess marginal portfolio utility.

11How do you demonstrate judgement under incomplete information?+
Answer framework

State what is known, rank critical uncertainties, model scenarios, identify information that could change the decision and recommend a proportionate next step.

12What questions would you ask an ADIA investment professional?+
Answer framework

Ask about team mandate, portfolio construction, internal versus external management, investment debate, performance attribution and collaboration across departments.

13How would you build a strategic allocation across equities, bonds and alternatives?+
Answer framework

Start with liabilities or capital objectives, horizon, liquidity needs and risk appetite. Estimate forward returns, correlations and tail scenarios; impose constraints and test robustness.

14Why are historical correlations unreliable in crises?+
Answer framework

Correlations are regime-dependent; liquidity shocks and common risk factors can cause supposedly diversified assets to sell off together.

15Explain marginal contribution to portfolio risk.+
Answer framework

The incremental effect of a position on total portfolio volatility or expected shortfall, accounting for covariance rather than just standalone risk.

16How do you measure risk beyond volatility?+
Answer framework

Consider drawdown, expected shortfall, liquidity-at-risk, concentration, factor exposures, leverage, counterparty risk and scenario losses.

17How would you stress-test a $10bn portfolio?+
Answer framework

Apply coherent shocks to equity valuations, yields, credit spreads, FX and illiquid marks; model correlations and liquidity requirements under stress.

18What is the difference between strategic and active risk?+
Answer framework

Strategic risk arises from the policy portfolio; active risk is the deviation from that benchmark introduced by managers, security selection or tactical tilts.

19How do you assess currency risk for a global investor?+
Answer framework

Separate asset-local return from FX translation; evaluate currency liabilities, hedging cost, carry, basis and diversification benefits.

20Why can private assets appear less volatile than public equities?+
Answer framework

Appraisal lags and infrequent marking smooth observed returns; economic risk can remain substantial.

21How would you assess portfolio liquidity?+
Answer framework

Map cash needs, commitments, distributions, collateral and potential redemptions against stressed liquid assets and funding sources.

22How does rebalancing add value?+
Answer framework

It controls drift and risk concentrations; in some conditions it imposes a disciplined contrarian trade-off, subject to costs and market impact.

23What is a risk budget?+
Answer framework

A deliberate allocation of permissible risk by asset class, strategy, factor or manager rather than simply allocating nominal capital.

24How do you explain a portfolio underperforming its benchmark?+
Answer framework

Separate allocation, selection, currency, fees and timing effects; examine whether deviations were intended, rewarded and within risk limits.

25Walk through an LBO model from entry to exit.+
Answer framework

Forecast EBITDA, cash conversion, capital expenditure, working capital and debt amortisation. Estimate exit EV, net debt and equity proceeds; calculate MOIC and IRR.

26How do you evaluate a direct co-investment alongside a sponsor?+
Answer framework

Assess sponsor quality, entry price, underwriting assumptions, governance, concentration, fees, exit alignment and whether the deal improves portfolio exposures.

27What drives private equity returns?+
Answer framework

EBITDA growth, multiple movement, leverage, deleveraging and interim cash flows; identify which components are operational versus market-driven.

28Why might a high EBITDA multiple still be justified?+
Answer framework

Durable organic growth, recurring revenue, pricing power, low capital intensity and high cash conversion may justify valuation, but require sensitivity testing.

29How do you diligence quality of earnings?+
Answer framework

Normalise one-offs, test revenue recognition, customer concentration, churn, margin sustainability, working capital and cash-to-EBITDA conversion.

30What is the difference between MOIC and IRR?+
Answer framework

MOIC is total invested-capital multiple; IRR incorporates cash-flow timing. Neither alone captures absolute value creation or risk.

31Explain DPI, RVPI and TVPI.+
Answer framework

DPI is distributed value / paid-in capital; RVPI is residual value / paid-in capital; TVPI is their sum.

32How would you evaluate a continuation vehicle?+
Answer framework

Assess fairness of valuation, conflicts, exit alternatives, governance, fee reset, liquidity options and remaining underwriting.

33What makes an attractive private equity manager?+
Answer framework

Repeatable sourcing edge, disciplined entry prices, genuine operational improvement, realised track record, attribution, team stability and aligned economics.

34How would you challenge a sponsor’s base case?+
Answer framework

Test price, volume, churn, margins, capex, working capital, debt cost and exit multiples against independent downside evidence.

35How do leverage and refinancing risk interact?+
Answer framework

Floating-rate debt raises interest expense; maturities and covenant headroom may become binding precisely when exit valuations weaken.

36How do you underwrite an exit without relying on multiple expansion?+
Answer framework

Build returns from earnings growth and deleveraging; use conservative or flat exit multiples and identify strategic-buyer and IPO constraints.

37Pitch a global listed equity to an investment committee.+
Answer framework

Present variant perception, earnings drivers, valuation, catalysts, risk factors, downside case and position sizing relative to the benchmark.

38Explain the difference between enterprise and equity value.+
Answer framework

Enterprise value reflects the operating business; equity value is residual value after net debt and other claims, subject to adjustments.

39How do you value a company using a DCF?+
Answer framework

Forecast unlevered free cash flows, discount at WACC, add terminal value, then bridge EV to equity; stress terminal growth and discount rates.

40What is duration?+
Answer framework

A measure of bond-price sensitivity to yield changes; modified duration approximates percentage price change for a 1 percentage point yield move.

41How does convexity improve duration-based estimates?+
Answer framework

It captures curvature in the price-yield relationship, especially for larger yield moves; optionality can produce negative convexity.

42What happens to a 7-duration bond if yields rise 100bp?+
Answer framework

Approximately a 7% price decline before convexity, spread changes and carry; state that duration is a first-order estimate.

43What is the difference between credit spread and default risk?+
Answer framework

Spreads compensate for expected loss, liquidity, risk premium and other factors; spread widening need not imply immediate default.

44How would you assess an emerging-market sovereign bond?+
Answer framework

Examine fiscal position, external funding, FX regime, reserve adequacy, political and legal risk, debt maturity and recovery scenarios.

45When does passive investing make sense?+
Answer framework

When market efficiency, low fees, liquidity and implementation costs favour index exposure over the expected net alpha of active managers.

46What is tracking error?+
Answer framework

Annualised volatility of portfolio return minus benchmark return; interpret alongside active share, drawdown and risk-factor exposures.

47How do real yields influence asset valuation?+
Answer framework

Higher real discount rates can pressure long-duration equity valuations and real assets, with outcomes mediated by earnings and growth expectations.

48How do you distinguish alpha from factor exposure?+
Answer framework

Regress or attribute returns against relevant factors, inspect persistence and costs, and test performance in different regimes.

49How do you value a stabilised commercial property?+
Answer framework

Capitalise sustainable NOI using a defensible cap rate, cross-check DCF and comparable transactions, then adjust for leasing, capex and debt.

50What happens to value when cap rates expand?+
Answer framework

Holding NOI constant, a higher cap rate lowers valuation; a move from 5% to 6% reduces value by about 16.7%.

51How would you diligence a logistics asset?+
Answer framework

Review tenant credit, lease duration, location, vacancy, rental growth, capex, energy performance and alternative-use demand.

52How do you value a regulated utility?+
Answer framework

Model regulated asset base, allowed return, capex, inflation linkage, operating efficiency, financing and regulatory resets.

53What is DSCR?+
Answer framework

Debt service coverage ratio = cash flow available for debt service divided by scheduled interest and principal; assess both base and stress cases.

54How do merchant and contracted infrastructure assets differ?+
Answer framework

Merchant assets bear demand and price risk; contracted assets may transfer some risk to counterparties but introduce counterparty and renewal exposure.

55How would you evaluate an airport concession?+
Answer framework

Model passenger traffic, aeronautical and retail revenues, operating leverage, concession terms, maintenance capex and regulatory risk.

56What are the risks in renewable energy infrastructure?+
Answer framework

Resource variability, power-price exposure, curtailment, grid connection, permitting, counterparty quality and residual asset life.

57How would you assess inflation protection?+
Answer framework

Identify contractual indexation, lag, caps, cost pass-through and whether revenue inflation offsets financing and operating costs.

58How do you compare infrastructure and private equity return targets?+
Answer framework

Compare cash yield, growth, downside protection, leverage, duration, liquidity and portfolio correlation rather than assuming a universal target.

59How do you select an external fund manager?+
Answer framework

Test investment edge, process repeatability, people, portfolio construction, capacity, controls, fees and net-of-fee risk-adjusted performance.

60What is the difference between operational and investment due diligence?+
Answer framework

Investment diligence assesses alpha and risk; operational diligence tests valuation, custody, controls, service providers, cybersecurity and business resilience.

61How would you investigate a hedge fund with high Sharpe ratio?+
Answer framework

Examine leverage, liquidity, stale pricing, hidden short-volatility exposures, backtest bias, factor betas and crisis performance.

62How does manager capacity affect expected returns?+
Answer framework

A strategy’s alpha may erode as assets grow, execution costs rise or opportunities become crowded.

63What is a high-water mark?+
Answer framework

A fee mechanism that generally prevents performance fees being charged again on previously lost value, subject to fund terms.

64How would you negotiate fund economics as a large allocator?+
Answer framework

Evaluate management and performance fees, hurdle, fee offsets, transparency, governance, co-invest rights and side-letter consistency.

65How do you assess a manager’s track record?+
Answer framework

Separate realised and unrealised performance, vintage effects, factor beta, attribution, survivorship bias and team continuity.

66What would trigger a manager termination review?+
Answer framework

Persistent process drift, unexplained risk, control failures, key-person departures, conflicts or material loss of conviction.

67Tell me about an investment thesis you changed your mind on.+
Answer framework

Use a specific example: initial view, new evidence, revised probability estimates, action taken and outcome.

68Describe a time you disagreed with a senior investor.+
Answer framework

Show respectful debate, data-driven reasoning, willingness to update and commitment to the final decision.

69How do you prioritise when three investment deadlines collide?+
Answer framework

Rank materiality, decision irreversibility and information value; clarify owners, communicate trade-offs and escalate early.

70Tell me about a financial model error you caught.+
Answer framework

Explain checks, reconciliation, sensitivity analysis, how you corrected the error and controls adopted.

71What would you do if a colleague proposed using non-public information?+
Answer framework

Do not trade or distribute it; follow compliance procedures and seek guidance immediately.

72How would you present an unpopular no-invest recommendation?+
Answer framework

Lead with thesis-breakers and quantified downside, acknowledge the bull case and propose what evidence would change your mind.

73How do you work across different cultures and disciplines?+
Answer framework

Offer an example of adapting communication while preserving clarity, integrity and respectful challenge.

74What is your biggest analytical weakness?+
Answer framework

Choose a genuine but manageable gap and demonstrate concrete improvement through practice, feedback and checks.

75How do you remain curious about markets?+
Answer framework

Describe a repeatable research process that turns reading, data and expert discussions into falsifiable investment hypotheses.

76How would you communicate complex risk to a non-specialist?+
Answer framework

Translate into dollar losses, probability ranges, key drivers and choices; avoid unsupported precision.

77Describe a decision you made with incomplete data.+
Answer framework

Show prioritisation of critical unknowns, scenario framing, decision timing and post-decision learning.

78Why should ADIA hire you?+
Answer framework

Connect role-relevant technical skills, evidence of sound judgement, integrity, collaboration and commitment to long-horizon investing.

03 / Worked investment exercises

Five investment cases with calculations and judgement

These hypothetical exercises test both arithmetic and the investment committee discussion that should follow. Assumptions are illustrative and not ADIA transactions.

CASE 01

Strategic allocation & stress test

A $10bn illustrative multi-asset portfolio

Assumptions

Allocate 40% developed equities, 10% emerging equities, 20% bonds, 15% private equity, 10% real assets and 5% cash. Expected nominal returns: 7%, 9%, 4%, 11%, 7% and 3%. Stress shocks: −25%, −35%, +4%, −30%, −18% and 0%.

Worked solution

Expected return = 0.40×7% + 0.10×9% + 0.20×4% + 0.15×11% + 0.10×7% + 0.05×3% = 7.0% or $700m annually, before fees. Stress return = −10% −3.5% +0.8% −4.5% −1.8% = −19.0%, a $1.9bn illustrative loss.

Investment committee discussion

The arithmetic is a scenario, not a prediction. Challenge cross-asset correlations, liquidity, valuation lags, FX, leverage and whether the portfolio remains inside its mandate.

CASE 02

Private equity LBO

Underwrite a $1.0bn enterprise-value acquisition

Assumptions

Entry EBITDA $100m, entry multiple 10×, equity cheque $400m, acquisition debt $600m. At year five, EBITDA reaches $145m, exit multiple is 9×, remaining debt $350m. No interim distributions.

Worked solution

Exit EV = $145m × 9 = $1,305m. Exit equity = $1,305m − $350m = $955m. MOIC = $955m / $400m = 2.39×. Five-year IRR = (955/400)^(1/5)−1 ≈ 19.0%. At an 8× exit multiple, equity = $810m, MOIC 2.03×, IRR ≈ 15.2%.

Investment committee discussion

Do not rely on a 9× exit; test lower EBITDA, refinancing costs, cash conversion and debt amortisation. Explain why the deal merits capital versus other portfolio opportunities.

CASE 03

Infrastructure project finance

Value a contracted renewable asset

Assumptions

Invest $300m equity in a project with $500m debt. Annual cash flow available for debt service is $75m; scheduled annual debt service is $60m. At exit, asset EV is $900m and debt outstanding is $420m.

Worked solution

Entry EV = $800m. Initial DSCR = $75m / $60m = 1.25×. Exit equity value = $900m − $420m = $480m. Equity value multiple at exit = 1.60×, excluding interim distributions.

Investment committee discussion

An IRR cannot be calculated reliably without a holding period and actual equity distributions. Review power-purchase agreements, merchant exposure, curtailment, debt covenants and residual asset life.

CASE 04

Rates & credit risk

Estimate the effect of a yield shock

Assumptions

A $2bn bond portfolio has modified duration 6.0 years. Assume an instantaneous parallel +75bp yield move, holding spread and convexity effects aside.

Worked solution

Approximate price return ≈ −6.0 × 0.0075 = −4.5%. Dollar price impact ≈ −$90m. If yields fall 75bp instead, first-order price gain is about $90m.

Investment committee discussion

Add convexity for a second-order estimate. Check key-rate duration, nonparallel curve shifts, spread duration, carry, FX and liquidity.

CASE 05

External manager selection

Choose between two hypothetical equity managers

Assumptions

Manager A: 10% gross annual return, 1.5% fee, 14% volatility, 0.8 benchmark beta. Manager B: 9.5% gross return, 0.5% fee, 12% volatility, 1.0 beta. Assume fee figures are annual percentage-point deductions for illustration.

Worked solution

Approximate net returns: A = 8.5%; B = 9.0%. Manager B leads on simple net return and volatility, but this is insufficient to determine alpha or suitability.

Investment committee discussion

Ask for benchmark-relative returns, factor-adjusted alpha, drawdowns, capacity, liquidity, operations, fees, personnel continuity and portfolio diversification. Make a conditional recommendation, not a simplistic ranking.

04 / How to structure answers

The five-part investment answer

1. ObjectiveDefine the mandate, benchmark and decision to be made.
2. DriversIdentify valuation, cash flow, growth and key exposures.
3. ScenariosQuantify base, upside and downside outcomes.
4. Portfolio fitConsider correlation, liquidity, sizing and concentration.
5. DecisionRecommend, reject or seek specific missing evidence.

Avoid presenting a high headline IRR as sufficient evidence. A credible recommendation identifies what must be true, what can go wrong, and how much risk the portfolio should take.
