How to prepare for a Blackstone interview

Blackstone is an alternative asset manager, not a single-strategy private equity firm. Interview preparation should reflect the investment group you are applying to: corporate private equity, real estate, credit and insurance, infrastructure, tactical opportunities or secondaries.

PE
Private equity

Paper LBOs, investment theses, cash flow, operational value creation and exit assumptions.

RE
Real estate

NOI, cap rates, property underwriting, financing and asset-level downside.

BXCI
Credit & insurance

Cash flow coverage, collateral, spreads, covenants, debt structure and recoveries.

This is an independent practice guide. Questions and cases are original preparation material; the exact content of Blackstone interviews is not publicly standardised.

Blackstone analyst and internship recruitment process

Blackstone’s official student careers page says selected candidates should expect a first-round video interview with a team member followed by face-to-face meetings if they progress. Additional assessments mentioned by candidates should not be treated as universal.

Worked private equity case: five-year paper LBO

A hypothetical business has $100m EBITDA, is acquired at 10.0× EBITDA and financed with $500m of debt. After five years, EBITDA is $140m, exit valuation is 9.0×, and outstanding debt is $300m.

Entry to exit equity bridge

Entry EV
$1,000m
Entry equity
$500m
Exit EV
$1,260m
Exit equity
$960m

MOIC: $960m ÷ $500m = 1.92×. Five-year gross IRR: (1.92)^(1/5) − 1 ≈ 13.9%.

How to go beyond the maths

Explain what portion of returns comes from EBITDA growth, debt paydown and exit multiple changes. Stress-test a recession scenario and higher refinancing costs. Discuss whether value creation relies on operational improvement or aggressive financial assumptions.

Worked real estate case: NOI and cap rates

A logistics property produces $12m stabilised annual NOI. At a 5.0% cap rate, the implied property value is $240m. What happens if the exit cap rate expands to 6.0% while NOI stays flat?

Cap-rate sensitivity

4.5% cap
$266.7m
5.0% cap
$240m
5.5% cap
$218.2m
6.0% cap
$200m

Value falls $40m (16.7%) from the 5.0% cap-rate case, assuming unchanged NOI and no other valuation adjustments.

Interview follow-up: how would rent growth, vacancy, lease rollover, tenant credit, capital expenditure and financing costs change the investment decision?
