TechnologyHow to prepare for a Permira interview
Permira invests through thematic private equity and credit strategies, with deep expertise in Technology, Consumer, Healthcare and Services. Successful preparation should demonstrate both numerical accuracy and an investor’s ability to distinguish a great business from a great investment.
Flagship
Control-oriented upper-mid-market buyouts, with an emphasis on international growth and transformation.
Ascent
Mid-market growth investments with control, co-control or high-governance structures.
Credit
Direct lending, CLO management and flexible capital solutions with a focus on downside protection.
What might the Permira interview process involve?
Public candidate accounts describe conversations with investment professionals and, in some cases, investment cases, technical discussions or presentations. Other candidates report fewer or no formal cases. Do not treat any single account as a universal hiring process.
Motivation & fit
Why Permira, sector interest, collaboration and your transaction experience.
Technical judgement
Valuation, LBOs, accounting, cash flow and commercial diligence.
Investment case
Develop a thesis, assess risks, model returns and defend a recommendation.
Prepare one recent investment from the official Permira portfolio and be ready to discuss its business model, market structure, strategic rationale and possible downside.

14. How does a £10 increase in depreciation affect the statements? Accounting & valuation
Answer guidance: At 25% tax: EBIT and pre-tax income down £10, net income down £7.50; cash flow adds back £10, so cash up £2.50; PP&E down £10, equity down £7.50.

18. How do you calculate unlevered free cash flow? Accounting & valuation
Answer guidance: EBIT×(1−tax)+D&A−capex−increase in net working capital.
19. What happens when working capital increases? Accounting & valuation

Answer guidance: Excessive leverage, weak cash conversion, dilution, falling multiples and overpayment.

Answer guidance: EBITDA growth, margin expansion, debt reduction, entry/exit multiple change and distributions.

29. What makes a company a good buyout target? LBO modelling & returns
Answer guidance: Defensible cash flows, durable margins, attractive industry, cash conversion, operational upside and credible management.
30. How does a 1× change in exit EBITDA multiple affect returns? LBO modelling & returns

Answer guidance: Borrow when cash falls below minimum, repay with excess cash, accrue interest on balances and test circularity.
33. How does management rollover affect sponsor returns? LBO modelling & returns
Answer guidance: It reduces sponsor equity funding but changes ownership and exit proceeds; model incentives explicitly.
34. What is a dividend recapitalisation? LBO modelling & returns
Answer guidance: A portfolio company raises debt to distribute cash to owners; improves interim liquidity but increases leverage.
35. What does an entry-to-exit bridge show? LBO modelling & returns

Book Mock Interview ↗Three detailed Permira-style investment cases
These hypothetical examples test return calculations, operating assumptions and commercial reasoning. They do not describe actual Permira investments.
€600m European services buyout
A B2B services company generates €60m EBITDA. The entry multiple is 10.0×; financing consists of €360m debt and €240m sponsor equity. Five years later EBITDA is €85m, the exit multiple is 10.0× and remaining debt is €250m.
| Step | Calculation | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Entry EV | €60m × 10.0× | €600m |
| Entry equity | €600m − €360m | €240m |
| Exit EV | €85m × 10.0× | €850m |
| Exit equity | €850m − €250m | €600m |
| MOIC | €600m / €240m | 2.50× |
| Five-year gross IRR | (2.5)^(1/5) − 1 | 20.1% |
Investment committee challenge: What if the exit multiple compresses to 8.5×? Exit EV falls to €722.5m, exit equity to €472.5m, MOIC to 1.97× and five-year gross IRR to approximately 14.5%.
Discussion: What operational plan supports the €25m EBITDA increase? How would you assess customer retention, pricing power, cash conversion and management incentives?
Subscription software ARR bridge
A software business starts with €100m ARR. Over the year it loses €6m to churn, €4m to downgrades, adds €20m of expansion ARR and wins €25m in new customers.
Calculation: GRR = (€100m − €6m − €4m)/€100m = 90%; NRR = (€100m − €6m − €4m + €20m)/€100m = 110%; ending ARR = €100m − €10m + €20m + €25m = €135m.
Diligence: Segment churn by customer size and cohort, check implementation costs, validate ARR definitions, investigate upsell concentration and stress-test new-logo acquisition efficiency. High NRR does not offset all weaknesses in gross retention.
€50m growth investment and dilution
An investor commits €50m of primary capital at a €200m pre-money equity valuation. After four years the company is sold for €500m equity value, with no further dilution or distributions.
Calculation: Ownership = €50m / (€200m + €50m) = 20%; proceeds = 20% × €500m = €100m; MOIC = 2.0×; IRR = 2^(1/4) − 1 ≈ 18.9%.
