Worked aviation finance interview cases
Practise a clear structure, calculate accurately and explain the commercial implication. All figures below are fictional learning scenarios.
Should the airline add capacity on a Doha–Europe route?
An illustrative route currently has 200,000 available seats, 80% seat occupancy and an average ticket fare of QAR 2,000. Management considers increasing capacity by 10%, with occupancy falling to 78% and average fare to QAR 1,950.
Calculate passenger ticket revenue
Current: 200,000 × 80% × QAR 2,000 = QAR 320m.
Proposed: 220,000 × 78% × QAR 1,950 = QAR 334.62m.
Incremental revenue: QAR 14.62m, approximately 4.6%. That does not establish incremental profit. You must compare added fuel, crew, airport, maintenance and opportunity costs before recommending capacity growth.
Explain a QAR 50m overspend in airline operating costs
Illustrative quarterly cost budget: QAR 500m. Actual cost: QAR 550m. Break the QAR 50m variance into plausible operational drivers.
Variance: (550 − 500) ÷ 500 = 10% unfavourable. Discuss whether each driver is volume-related, rate-related, timing-related or exceptional. Recommend targeted controls without assuming that cutting costs always improves safety or service.
