01Why Allianz rather than a pure-play insurer or asset manager?+
Explain the integrated insurance and asset-management model, global scale, long-duration liabilities and customer protection. Match your preferred business unit to its actual responsibilities.
02How do Allianz Investment Management, Allianz Global Investors and PIMCO differ?+
AIM steers investments of Allianz insurance portfolios with ALM constraints; AllianzGI and PIMCO manage investment strategies for clients. Distinguish proprietary versus third-party assets.
03How does an insurer create shareholder value?+
Discuss underwriting margin, investment returns, capital efficiency, customer retention and disciplined risk selection; distinguish accounting profit from cash and distributable capital.
04What would you investigate before joining Allianz Commercial?+
Review product lines, claims inflation, catastrophe exposure, distribution, reinsurance and specialty risk pricing.
05How does Allianz Trade differ from P&C insurance?+
Discuss trade credit protection against buyer nonpayment, credit monitoring, exposure limits, country risk and claims recoveries.
06How would you explain Allianz’s business to a client in one minute?+
Present protection, risk pooling, life and retirement solutions, commercial insurance and asset management, avoiding conflation of product and legal entities.
07What makes a strong long-term insurance investment strategy?+
Start from liability cash flows, solvency capital, liquidity needs and downside resilience, then seek return within those constraints.
08What would you ask a senior portfolio manager at Allianz?+
Ask about ALM assumptions, investment decision rights, risk budgeting, manager oversight and how a portfolio reacts to rate shocks.
09Explain the combined ratio.+
Combined ratio = incurred claims and expenses divided by earned premiums. Below 100% implies underwriting profit before investment income. Explain calendar-year versus accident-year effects.
10What is the loss ratio?+
Incurred claims / earned premiums; assess frequency, severity, reserve releases and catastrophe distortion.
11What is the expense ratio?+
Underwriting and operating expenses / earned premiums; explain acquisition cost, administration and distribution channel mix.
12What are IBNR reserves?+
Incurred but not reported claim liabilities estimated using actuarial development patterns and uncertainty margins.
13How does reinsurance change an insurer’s economics?+
Ceded premium reduces retained premium and exposure; recoveries reduce net claims, but counterparty, attachment and cost considerations remain.
14How do written and earned premiums differ?+
Written premiums reflect contracts bound; earned premiums recognise coverage as insurance service is provided over time.
15What drives reserve deterioration?+
Claims severity inflation, legal changes, reporting delays, adverse development and incorrect original assumptions.
16How do you assess catastrophe exposure?+
Aggregate exposures by peril and geography, review probable maximum loss, reinsurance limits and correlation.
17How would a price increase affect profitability?+
Separate price from volume, mix, retention and claims trend; estimate impact on earned premiums over time.
18What is the difference between IFRS 17 insurance service result and investment result?+
IFRS 17 presents insurance contract service performance separately from insurance finance income/expense and investments; specifics depend on measurement model.
19What is a contractual service margin?+
For eligible groups under IFRS 17, CSM represents unearned profit recognised as services are provided; do not treat it as free cash.
20How does adverse selection affect insurance pricing?+
If high-risk customers disproportionately purchase cover, expected claims rise; segmentation, underwriting and monitoring are needed.
21What is asset–liability management?+
Match asset risk, duration, cash flow and currency to insurance liabilities while optimising expected return within capital and liquidity limits.
22What is duration mismatch?+
Difference between rate sensitivity of assets and liabilities; approximate surplus impact from parallel yield shifts and consider convexity.
23Why might Allianz own long-dated bonds?+
Long-duration liabilities can benefit from long-dated assets that hedge rates; credit, liquidity and regulatory capital still matter.
24How would you set strategic asset allocation?+
Estimate liability profile, return and covariance assumptions, capital charges, liquidity, concentration and scenario robustness.
25How do you evaluate an external manager?+
Assess repeatable process, benchmark fit, net alpha, drawdowns, team stability, risk controls, fees and operational due diligence.
26How would rising interest rates affect Allianz?+
Bond market values may fall while discount rates on liabilities change; reinvestment yields improve. Net impact depends on duration gap, accounting and solvency.
27What is spread duration?+
Sensitivity of bond value to credit spread changes, distinct from government yield duration.
28How do you compare investment-grade and private credit?+
Contrast yield, illiquidity, covenants, defaults, recovery, origination costs, capital treatment and portfolio fit.
29Why invest in infrastructure debt?+
Potential contractual cash flows and duration fit; scrutinise construction risk, regulation, inflation linkage and refinancing.
30What is the liquidity premium?+
Additional expected compensation for less liquid assets; estimate net of transaction costs, capital usage and uncertainty.
31What does portfolio diversification fail to protect against?+
Correlations can spike during stress; common risk factors, liquidity shocks and forced sales can overwhelm apparent asset-class diversification.
32What is a liability-replicating portfolio?+
A portfolio designed to mirror sensitivity and cash-flow characteristics of obligations for hedging and ALM modelling.
33How would you value an insurance company?+
Use price/book, ROE versus cost of equity, dividend discount or residual income; account for capital adequacy, reserve quality and franchise.
34Why is EV/EBITDA often less useful for insurers?+
Financial liabilities and investment assets are core operations; enterprise value conventions differ from industrial businesses.
35Explain Solvency II solvency ratio.+
Eligible own funds divided by Solvency Capital Requirement; interpret buffer quality, volatility and capital generation.
36What is SCR?+
Regulatory capital requirement intended to cover specified severe losses over a one-year horizon under the relevant framework.
37How do catastrophe losses affect capital?+
They reduce underwriting earnings and may reduce eligible own funds, subject to reinsurance, tax and accounting effects.
38What is economic capital?+
An internal risk measure estimating capital needed against potential losses; compare assumptions and regulatory requirements.
39How would you stress test an insurance balance sheet?+
Shock yields, spreads, equities, FX, catastrophe claims and lapses; trace earnings, liquidity and solvency effects.
40What is value at risk and its limitation?+
Quantile estimate of potential loss under assumptions; does not describe tail severity beyond the quantile.
41How do you assess concentration risk?+
Map by counterparty, sector, geography, peril, instrument and correlated exposures.
42What would make a higher-yield asset unattractive?+
Poor expected loss-adjusted return, liquidity mismatch, weak covenant, capital burden or tail correlation.
43How does inflation affect P&C underwriting?+
Claims severity and replacement costs rise; premiums reprice with lag and reserve adequacy may weaken.
44What would you include in a board risk dashboard?+
Solvency, liquidity, duration gap, catastrophe PML, combined ratio, reserve development, credit migration and top concentrations.
45How does a bond price react to a 100bp yield rise?+
Approximate percentage change = −modified duration × 1%; add convexity adjustment for large moves.
46What is convexity?+
Second-order curvature in the bond price–yield relationship; typically improves simple duration approximations for large moves.
47How would you analyse a corporate bond?+
Review business model, leverage, cash flow, coverage, covenants, maturity wall, ranking, recovery and relative spread.
48What is a credit spread?+
Yield premium over a reference risk-free curve reflecting default, liquidity and other risk premia.
49Why might a steepening yield curve matter?+
It changes reinvestment, duration exposure, funding assumptions and relative value across maturities.
50How would you construct a defensive bond portfolio?+
Diversify issuer and sector, manage duration and spread duration, hold liquidity, test stress and avoid hidden factor crowding.
51How do currency hedges affect foreign bond returns?+
Include forward points, basis, transaction costs and residual risk; local yield is not equal to hedged home-currency return.
52What is a fallen angel bond?+
Debt downgraded from investment grade to high yield; consider mandate limits and forced-sale pressure.
53How would you evaluate an infrastructure equity investment?+
Model cash flow, regulation, demand, capex, financing, exit, inflation and political risks.
54What is the difference between yield-to-maturity and current yield?+
YTM includes price pull-to-par and coupons under assumptions; current yield is annual coupon divided by market price.
55How would you improve motor insurance profitability?+
Segment claims drivers, repair inflation, fraud, distribution economics, repricing and retention, while considering fairness and regulation.
56How would you evaluate an AI claims-triage pilot?+
Define baseline, precision/recall, false denial risks, adjuster time, leakage, customer outcomes and governance.
57How do you decide whether to launch a new insurance product?+
Validate customer need, loss data, pricing, capital, distribution, compliance and operational capacity.
58Tell me about a decision made with incomplete information.+
Use STAR; show scenario ranges, downside control, stakeholder communication and post-decision review.
59Describe a time you challenged a model assumption.+
Explain materiality, independent evidence, sensitivity analysis and how the decision changed.
60How do you handle a disagreement with an actuary or risk team?+
Clarify objectives and model definitions, seek evidence and agree escalation criteria.
61How would you communicate portfolio losses to executives?+
Separate market, credit, FX and active decisions; show benchmarks, risk budget and next steps.
62What would you automate in investment operations?+
Target reconciliations, data quality and reporting; design exception handling, audit logs and human approval.
63How do you prioritise urgent work across teams?+
Rank by customer harm, regulatory deadline, financial materiality and dependencies; communicate trade-offs.
64What questions would you ask at the end of the interview?+
Ask about the unit’s mandate, current risks, success metrics, collaboration and decision-making.

Five Allianz-style finance and insurance case studies
These are hypothetical practice exercises, not actual Allianz transactions. Figures are illustrative and simplified to make the core concepts clear.
Underwriting profitability & combined ratio
Scenario
A fictional P&C portfolio earns €1,200m premiums, incurs €810m claims and €330m expenses. Claims rise 8% while premiums increase 5%, with expenses unchanged.
Worked solution
Base combined ratio = (€810m + €330m) / €1,200m = 95.0%. Stress premiums = €1,260m; claims = €874.8m; expenses = €330m; stressed ratio = €1,204.8m / €1,260m = 95.62%. Base underwriting profit = €60m; stress profit = €55.2m.
Challenge: How do renewal timing, claims reserve releases and catastrophe volatility change the result?
ALM duration stress
Scenario
An insurer holds €10bn bonds with modified duration 6 and has €9bn interest-sensitive liabilities with modified duration 7. Rates rise 100 basis points; ignore convexity.
Worked solution
Assets: −6% × €10bn = −€600m. Liabilities: −7% × €9bn = −€630m (economic liability value decreases). Net surplus change ≈ +€30m. Initial surplus €1bn becomes €1.03bn before other factors.
Challenge: Discuss nonparallel shifts, spreads, policyholder behaviour, solvency rules and accounting.
Corporate bond underwriting
Scenario
A fictional company has €1bn EBITDA, €3.5bn gross debt, €300m cash, €180m annual interest and €450m annual free cash flow before debt repayment.
Worked solution
Net debt = €3.2bn; net leverage = 3.2×. EBITDA / interest = 5.56×. Assuming full FCF debt repayment and stable cash, net debt after one year = €2.75bn and leverage = 2.75×.
Challenge: Stress EBITDA −25%, higher refinancing costs, covenant headroom and recovery.
Insurer valuation & solvency
Scenario
A hypothetical insurer has €12bn book equity, €1.8bn normalised annual earnings, €1.2bn dividends and trades at 1.4× book. Eligible own funds are €24bn; SCR is €12bn.
Worked solution
Implied market cap = €16.8bn; ROE = 15%; P/E = 9.33×; dividend yield = 7.14%; solvency ratio = 200%. A €3bn reduction in eligible own funds gives 175%, assuming unchanged SCR.
Challenge: Explain why a high yield might reflect unsustainable capital distributions.
Infrastructure investment and liquidity
Scenario
A fictional infrastructure debt asset offers a 6.8% yield; expected annual credit loss is 0.7%, annual servicing costs 0.2% and incremental capital/liquidity cost estimated at 0.6%.
Worked solution
Illustrative net expected yield = 6.8% − 0.7% − 0.2% − 0.6% = 5.3%. Compare with an otherwise similar liquid bond yielding 4.8%: estimated pickup = 0.5 percentage points.
Challenge: Test default correlations, refinancing, regulatory changes and the validity of linear cost assumptions.
