What to expect from an Investec interview

Investec operates several specialist businesses. Interview preparation should be matched to the specific team rather than treating every role as a general investment banking interview.

Advisory

Investment banking

Mid-market M&A, equity capital markets, corporate broking and valuation.

Lending

Corporate banking

Cash-flow lending, acquisition finance, treasury, FX, covenants and credit risk.

Client service

Private banking

High-net-worth clients, lending, relationship management and suitability.

Important UK distinction: Investec UK offers private banking, while wealth and investment management services are available through its long-term strategic partner Rathbones. Do not assume the two are the same recruitment team.

Investec describes its UK investment banking business as focused on the mid-market, with advisory services for listed, privately owned and private equity-backed companies. Its corporate banking business supports established UK private companies, generally with turnover above £25m. Official investment banking overview.

Recruitment preparation

Interview stages: what to prepare for

Recruitment formats vary by team, office and seniority. The following is a practical preparation framework, not a verified Investec-wide process.

1. Application and screeningBe ready to explain your CV, motivation and team fit.
2. Competency and commercial interviewExpect examples of judgement, collaboration, initiative and awareness of clients and markets.
3. Technical or case assessment, where applicableInvestment banking candidates may need valuation and transaction analysis; banking candidates may need credit and lending scenarios.
4. Further stakeholder interviewsPrepare concise recommendations, evidence-based thinking and questions about the specific team.

Ask your recruiter about the actual format, time limits, calculator rules and whether a presentation or model is required.

Worked case 01

Investment banking case: valuation and equity bridge

A hypothetical UK services business generates £25m EBITDA and is valued at 9× EV/EBITDA. Net debt is £70m, with no other adjustments.

Calculate implied enterprise and equity value

Enterprise value£225m
Net debt£70m
Equity value£155m
Enterprise value
£225m
Net debt
£70m
Equity value
£155m

Solution: 25 × 9 = £225m enterprise value; £225m − £70m = £155m equity value.

Investment committee follow-up

Would 9× be justified? Discuss revenue concentration, recurring contracts, EBITDA quality, cash conversion, competitive position, transaction comparables and financing. If EBITDA falls 20% and the multiple contracts to 7×, enterprise value becomes £140m—£85m below the base case.

Worked case 02

Corporate banking case: lending and covenant headroom

A hypothetical company has £12m EBITDA, £48m net debt, £12m cash available for debt service and £8m annual debt service. Its covenant caps net leverage at 4.5×.

Underwrite the borrower

Net leverage4.0×
Debt service cover1.5×
Leverage headroom0.5×

Calculations: Net debt / EBITDA = 48 / 12 = 4.0×. DSCR = 12 / 8 = 1.5×. Headroom to the 4.5× covenant = 0.5×.

Stress test: If EBITDA falls 15% to £10.2m with unchanged net debt, leverage rises to 4.71×, above the hypothetical covenant limit. This is a simplified illustration; real covenants use contract-defined metrics and testing dates.

How to make the recommendation

Explain business resilience, cash conversion, debt maturity, interest-rate exposure, collateral, covenant definitions, sponsor support and mitigants. Present a clear lend / lend with conditions / decline decision.
