What makes YFM different?

YFM’s investment approach emphasises ambitious management teams, scalable businesses and operational support. Its value creation team focuses on revenue operations, talent and leadership, and ESG and sustainability. Prepare to discuss how a small business can scale without compromising cash flow or execution quality.

Important distinction: The interview questions below are independently authored preparation material grounded in YFM’s published strategy and common private equity technical skills. They are not presented as verbatim questions from YFM interviews.

Potential interview and assessment stages

YFM does not publish a universal candidate interview sequence on the sources reviewed. The following is a sensible preparation model, not a confirmed process.

01 · CV & fitMotivation, deal interest and commercial curiosity.
02 · TechnicalAccounting, valuation, LBOs and returns.
03 · Case studyAssess a hypothetical UK SME and investment thesis.
04 · Team discussionDefend assumptions, diligence and judgement.

For investment roles, prepare for a mix of behavioural, technical and case-style discussions. For portfolio, origination or investor relations roles, the emphasis may shift to value creation, sourcing or fund communication.

Worked case 1: UK SME management buyout

A hypothetical UK business generates £8m EBITDA. A sponsor buys it at 7× EBITDA with £32m debt and £24m equity. Five years later EBITDA reaches £10m, the exit multiple is 7× and net debt is £22m.

Paper LBO: entry to exit

Entry enterprise value
£56m
£8m × 7×
Exit equity value
£48m
£70m EV − £22m debt
Gross sponsor return
2.0×
≈14.9% five-year IRR

Return bridge: £10m exit EBITDA × 7 = £70m exit EV. Subtract £22m net debt to reach £48m equity value. Divide by £24m initial equity for 2.0× MOIC; annualise over five years for approximately 14.9% IRR.

Interview follow-up: The correct five-year IRR on a 2.0× MOIC is approximately 14.9% (2^(1/5) − 1). Challenge exit multiple assumptions, working capital requirements, founder rollover, integration risk and refinancing. An 18.9% IRR would correspond to a four-year holding period, not five.

All figures are hypothetical and exclude fees, taxes, interim distributions and transaction costs.

Worked case 2: £5m growth capital investment

A fictional B2B software business has £10m annual revenue, 80% recurring sales, 15% EBITDA margin and a proposal to raise £5m to accelerate expansion.

What would you investigate?

Commercial: Gross and net revenue retention, customer concentration, sales pipeline, pricing power and competitive differentiation. Financial: Cash burn, working capital, capex, CAC payback and realistic forecast assumptions. Governance: Founder incentives, board rights, investor protections and exit paths.

Illustrative use of proceeds

£2m sales hiring — validate ramp times and payback.

£1.5m product development — link roadmap to retention and expansion.

£1m market expansion — test geography-specific sales assumptions.

£0.5m working capital buffer — preserve runway.

Investment committee recommendation: A conditional yes could depend on strong cohort retention, a proven sales motion, founder alignment and credible downside liquidity. Avoid declaring a deal attractive solely because revenue is growing.

A 14-day structured plan can work for someone with finance foundations; tailor the duration to your experience.

Commercial judgement supported by accurate financial analysis and the ability to work constructively with management teams.
