Showing 76 of 76 questions
01Why L Catterton rather than a generalist buyout fund?+
Suggested answer framework

Lead with its dedicated consumer category research, global platform, operational resources and partnership with LVMH and Groupe Arnault. Show how understanding consumer behaviour can sharpen sourcing and underwriting. Explain why you personally enjoy analysing brands, channels and unit economics.

02How does a category-first investment process work?+
Suggested answer framework

Begin with secular changes in consumer needs, quantify addressable spending, identify attractive profit pools and map category winners. Then assess differentiated brands and management before building the financial case.

03How would you explain L Catterton’s relationship with LVMH?+
Suggested answer framework

The 2016 partnership brought together Catterton, LVMH and Groupe Arnault. Discuss potential access to consumer insights, retail know-how and brand expertise; do not imply every portfolio company receives direct LVMH distribution or endorsements.

04Which L Catterton platform interests you most?+
Suggested answer framework

Choose a specific strategy such as flagship buyout, growth, regional middle market, private credit or real estate. Compare cheque size, control, risk and the kind of value creation work that interests you.

05Pitch an attractive consumer category today.+
Suggested answer framework

Frame the pitch with a clearly defined consumer need, spending growth, repeat frequency, competitive dynamics, gross margin, distribution and a plausible exit buyer. State what would disprove the thesis.

06What makes a consumer brand enduring?+
Suggested answer framework

Assess repeat purchase, emotional connection, quality consistency, pricing power, distribution resilience, innovation cadence and low dependence on a single marketing channel.

07How do you distinguish a trend from a fad?+
Suggested answer framework

Use multi-year repeat purchase cohorts, breadth of demographics, organic search, retailer reorder rates, product utility and retention through a promotional downturn.

08How would you assess L Catterton’s global advantage?+
Suggested answer framework

Compare geographic sourcing, cross-border brand expansion, category insight sharing and local execution. A global network is useful only when it improves underwriting or operations.

09What consumer investment would you reject despite strong growth?+
Suggested answer framework

Give an example with weak contribution margin, high influencer dependence, poor retention, excessive inventory or fragile product claims. Show discipline on valuation and downside.

10What is your 60-second investment thesis for a premium brand?+
Suggested answer framework

State target customer, category tailwind, differentiation, evidence of repeat demand, unit economics, distribution upside, valuation and three major risks.

11How would you size a premium skincare market?+
Suggested answer framework

Start with addressable consumers × penetration × annual purchase frequency × average spend; segment by price tier and channel. Reconcile with retailer and industry estimates.

12What consumer surveys would you commission?+
Suggested answer framework

Test unaided awareness, consideration, trial, repeat purchase, willingness to pay, substitutes and reasons for churn. Separate stated intent from observed behaviour.

13How would you measure brand equity?+
Suggested answer framework

Track awareness, preference, price premium, NPS, repeat rates, earned media, search share and retailer shelf productivity, ideally by customer cohort.

14How do you diligence a beauty brand?+
Suggested answer framework

Review hero SKU concentration, repeat purchase, product claims, returns, gross margin, retailer sell-through, regulatory exposure and the innovation pipeline.

15What matters most in food and beverage diligence?+
Suggested answer framework

Assess velocity per store, gross-to-net revenue, shelf life, trade spend, co-manufacturer concentration, input inflation and reorder behaviour.

16How would you analyse a restaurant chain?+
Suggested answer framework

Study same-store sales, traffic versus ticket, four-wall EBITDA, labour, food costs, unit openings, payback and franchise economics.

17How would you evaluate a pet-care business?+
Suggested answer framework

Consider non-discretionary demand, subscription retention, customer lifetime value, ingredient or veterinary costs, regulatory exposure and category competition.

18How do you evaluate premiumisation?+
Suggested answer framework

Check whether consumers pay more for measurable quality or identity, whether price rises hold volumes, and whether the margin premium survives competitor imitation.

19How would you investigate channel conflict?+
Suggested answer framework

Map wholesale, marketplace, DTC and physical stores. Compare contribution margins, pricing discipline, customer ownership and cannibalisation.

20What are warning signs in retailer data?+
Suggested answer framework

Inventory growing faster than sell-through, heavy discounting, low reorder rates, returns, high concentration in one retail partner and weak store-level velocity.

21How would you validate a new market expansion?+
Suggested answer framework

Test brand awareness, local willingness to pay, regulations, distributor economics, logistics, consumer preferences and pilot-store productivity.

22How do you assess competitive moats in consumer?+
Suggested answer framework

Compare brand trust, product IP, proprietary sourcing, loyalty, retail relationships, distribution density and cost advantage. Distinguish barriers from marketing claims.

23Walk through the three financial statements for a consumer brand.+
Suggested answer framework

Link net income to cash flow, inventory and receivables to working capital, and retained earnings to the balance sheet. Highlight how growth can consume cash through inventory.

24How do you calculate enterprise value?+
Suggested answer framework

Equity value plus debt and debt-like claims minus cash and non-operating assets, with consistent treatment of leases and minority interests.

25When is EV/EBITDA misleading?+
Suggested answer framework

For high-growth brands with heavy working capital, capex, lease costs or exceptional marketing spend. Cross-check with unlevered free cash flow and unit economics.

26How would you normalise EBITDA?+
Suggested answer framework

Separate genuine one-offs from recurring founder compensation, launch costs, retailer promotions and marketing. Do not add back costs essential to sustain growth.

27What drives returns in a consumer LBO?+
Suggested answer framework

Entry multiple, EBITDA growth, free cash conversion, debt repayment and exit multiple. Attribute returns explicitly rather than assuming multiple expansion.

28Why does inventory matter in an LBO?+
Suggested answer framework

Inventory build absorbs cash and may hide obsolete stock. Review stock turns, seasonality, markdown risk and the purchase agreement working-capital peg.

29How do you model a price increase?+
Suggested answer framework

Estimate volume elasticity, channel mix, retailer margins, gross margin improvement and potential share loss. Stress-test competitor response.

30How do you value a fast-growing unprofitable brand?+
Suggested answer framework

Build revenue cohorts, contribution margin and a credible path to sustainable EBITDA; use comparable revenue multiples cautiously and triangulate with a DCF.

31Explain purchase price allocation and goodwill.+
Suggested answer framework

The purchase price is allocated to identifiable assets and liabilities at fair value, including brands and customer relationships; the residual is goodwill.

32How would you model lease liabilities?+
Suggested answer framework

Use a consistent approach to IFRS 16/ASC 842, enterprise value and EBITDA. Compare cash rent and lease-adjusted leverage to avoid double counting.

33What is a working-capital peg?+
Suggested answer framework

A negotiated normal level of net working capital at closing. A shortfall may reduce purchase price; seasonality and channel shifts matter.

34How do you model a downside case?+
Suggested answer framework

Reduce traffic or units, compress gross margin, increase marketing CAC and working-capital needs, and test covenant headroom and debt service.

35Explain CAC and customer lifetime value.+
Suggested answer framework

CAC is fully loaded acquisition spend divided by acquired customers. LTV should use contribution profit over realistic customer lifetime, net of churn and fulfilment.

36Why can ROAS be a poor decision metric?+
Suggested answer framework

Attribution windows and last-click credit may overstate incrementality. Measure contribution after product costs, returns, discounts and fulfilment.

37What is a healthy repeat purchase rate?+
Suggested answer framework

There is no universal threshold. Compare by product purchase cycle, cohort age, channel and category; calculate retention using the same denominator consistently.

38How would you improve DTC profitability?+
Suggested answer framework

Focus on gross margin, basket size, shipping efficiency, retention, paid-media incrementality and returns rather than simply cutting advertising.

39How would you assess wholesale expansion?+
Suggested answer framework

Compare retailer margin concessions, trade spend, sell-through, returns, working capital and brand positioning against DTC contribution.

40What is SKU rationalisation?+
Suggested answer framework

Prioritise products by incremental gross profit, repeat purchase and inventory turns. Remove low-contribution SKUs without damaging discovery or cross-sell.

41How do you evaluate an influencer-led brand?+
Suggested answer framework

Separate paid from organic demand, assess founder/key-person risk, repeat purchase without campaigns and transferability of brand loyalty.

42How would you test pricing power?+
Suggested answer framework

Analyse historical price changes, units sold, elasticity by cohort, competitor response and gross margin, controlling for promotions and mix.

43What is retail sales velocity?+
Suggested answer framework

Units or sales per store per week, often adjusted for distribution and seasonality. It indicates productivity and supports retailer reorder decisions.

44How would you evaluate a subscription business?+
Suggested answer framework

Examine voluntary and involuntary churn, retention by cohort, gross margin, payment failures, customer service and the value of subscriptions versus one-off sales.

45How would you measure omnichannel performance?+
Suggested answer framework

Use customer-level incrementality, store productivity, online conversion, returns and channel contribution; avoid double-counting online orders influenced by stores.

46What would you do if CAC rises 40%?+
Suggested answer framework

Diagnose auction inflation, conversion decline, creative fatigue and attribution; prioritise cohorts, referral, organic growth and profitable channels.

47Build a 100-day plan for a newly acquired brand.+
Suggested answer framework

Establish KPI baseline, management alignment, cash controls and critical risks; sequence quick wins in pricing, procurement, digital conversion and inventory.

48How could L Catterton improve gross margin?+
Suggested answer framework

Evaluate pricing, sourcing, freight, packaging, manufacturing yield, channel mix and SKU rationalisation; protect brand quality.

49How would you internationalise a consumer brand?+
Suggested answer framework

Rank markets by consumer fit and economics, test distributors, localise messaging, verify regulation and phase capex against pilot milestones.

50How would you optimise a retail footprint?+
Suggested answer framework

Analyse store-level contribution, catchment overlap, lease terms, conversion, staffing and omnichannel halo; close only where value is negative.

51What makes a buy-and-build consumer strategy work?+
Suggested answer framework

Complementary brands or distribution, realistic procurement savings, shared infrastructure and strong integration; avoid diluting distinctive brand identities.

52How would you improve inventory turns?+
Suggested answer framework

Improve forecasting, reduce lead times, rationalise SKUs and tighten replenishment, while measuring lost sales from stockouts.

53How do you design management incentives?+
Suggested answer framework

Tie rewards to sustainable EBITDA, cash conversion, customer retention and strategic milestones, not just topline growth.

54How would you prioritise digital transformation?+
Suggested answer framework

Quantify ROI for CRM, analytics, forecasting and e-commerce initiatives; choose projects with measurable adoption and operational owners.

55How would you evaluate procurement savings?+
Suggested answer framework

Separate one-time price renegotiation from durable supplier economics; include quality, concentration and lead-time risk.

56What is the role of an operating partner?+
Suggested answer framework

Support diligence and execution with specialist capabilities while management retains accountability for decisions and day-to-day operations.

57How does growth equity differ from control buyouts?+
Suggested answer framework

Growth deals may involve minority ownership, lighter leverage, governance rights and value creation through expansion rather than cost restructuring.

58How do you calculate dilution in a primary raise?+
Suggested answer framework

New investor ownership equals new primary capital divided by post-money equity valuation, before considering option pool expansion and preference terms.

59What protections matter in minority investing?+
Suggested answer framework

Board representation, information rights, reserved matters, pre-emption, anti-dilution and exit provisions, negotiated without impairing management agility.

60How would you underwrite an Asian consumer expansion?+
Suggested answer framework

Use country-level income, regulation, channel structure, consumer tastes, currency and distribution economics rather than extrapolating Western brand performance.

61What differs in a Latin American consumer deal?+
Suggested answer framework

Consider FX, inflation, payment methods, logistics, import duties, local competitors and purchasing power.

62How would you underwrite a luxury retail real estate asset?+
Suggested answer framework

Assess location, tenant covenant, sales density, lease escalators, occupancy cost and tourism sensitivity alongside property-level cash flows.

63How would you assess private credit to a consumer company?+
Suggested answer framework

Underwrite free cash flow, collateral, seasonality, covenant headroom, sponsor support and downside recovery under weak consumer demand.

64What is a unitranche loan?+
Suggested answer framework

A single blended debt instrument combining senior and subordinated risk, often with negotiated lender agreements and a higher coupon than pure first-lien senior debt.

65How would you model foreign exchange exposure?+
Suggested answer framework

Map revenue and costs by currency, assess natural hedges, translation effects, debt currency and downside liquidity.

66How do you compare a growth investment and a buyout?+
Suggested answer framework

Contrast ownership, governance, entry valuation, funding needs, dilution, cash returns, exit paths and downside control.

67Tell me about a time data contradicted your thesis.+
Suggested answer framework

Use situation, evidence, revised analysis, decision and learning. Emphasise willingness to change your mind.

68How would you challenge a charismatic founder?+
Suggested answer framework

Ask precise questions about retention, gross margin, unit economics and execution. Remain respectful while distinguishing narrative from evidence.

69Pitch a consumer business in three minutes.+
Suggested answer framework

Present category, brand differentiation, customer evidence, economics, valuation, growth plan, risks and a clear recommendation.

70How would you handle disagreement with an operating partner?+
Suggested answer framework

Align on objective metrics, surface assumptions, test alternatives and decide with clear ownership and follow-up milestones.

71What is your biggest analytical mistake?+
Suggested answer framework

Choose a genuine example, quantify the impact, explain how you corrected it and the control you introduced.

72How would you respond to a brand crisis?+
Suggested answer framework

Prioritise customer safety and facts, evaluate recall or regulatory exposure, liquidity, reputation and a transparent remediation plan.

73Describe a time you influenced without authority.+
Suggested answer framework

Demonstrate stakeholder mapping, evidence, listening, compromise and measurable outcome.

74What would make you walk away from a deal?+
Suggested answer framework

Highlight structural retention weakness, opaque accounting, poor governance, unsustainable CAC, product claims or a price that removes margin of safety.

75How would you present a downside case to IC?+
Suggested answer framework

Lead with what breaks the thesis, quantified cash impact, liquidity and covenant risk, mitigants and a clear recommendation.

76What questions would you ask the interviewer?+
Suggested answer framework

Ask about category research, operating team collaboration, post-close value creation, sector opportunities and expectations for junior investors.

No questions match your search. Try another term or category.
03 / NUMERICAL INVESTMENT CASES

Six worked consumer investment cases

Practise the calculations and then explain the commercial implications. All case companies, figures and scenarios below are hypothetical.

WORKED CASE 01

Premium beauty brand LBO

A consumer beauty company generates $50m EBITDA and is acquired at 12.0× EBITDA. Financing is 5.0× entry EBITDA of debt. EBITDA grows 12% annually for five years; debt falls to $150m. Exit at 11.0× EBITDA. Calculate entry equity, exit equity, MOIC and IRR.

Entry enterprise value$50m × 12.0 = $600m
Entry debt$50m × 5.0 = $250m
Entry equity$600m − $250m = $350m
Year-five EBITDA$50m × 1.12⁵ = $88.12m
Exit enterprise value$88.12m × 11.0 = $969.31m
Exit equity$969.31m − $150m = $819.31m
Gross MOIC$819.31m / $350m = 2.34×
Five-year gross IRR(2.3409)^(1/5) − 1 = 18.55%
Investment committee challenge

What if the exit multiple contracts to 9.0×? Which operating levers can defend the downside?

Illustrative case with hypothetical assumptions. Gross returns exclude fees, taxes and transaction costs unless specified.

WORKED CASE 02

DTC cohort economics

A brand spends $2.4m to acquire 40,000 customers. First-order average order value is $85, gross margin 65%, and fulfilment plus payment costs are $12 per order. Customers place an average of 2.4 orders over their lifetime at the same economics. Calculate CAC, contribution per order, lifetime contribution and LTV/CAC.

Customer acquisition cost$2.4m / 40,000 = $60
Contribution per order$85 × 65% − $12 = $43.25
Lifetime contribution per customer$43.25 × 2.4 = $103.80
Contribution LTV / CAC$103.80 / $60 = 1.73×
Net lifetime contribution after CAC$103.80 − $60 = $43.80
Investment committee challenge

Would you scale paid acquisition at 1.73× contribution LTV/CAC? How would you validate incrementality and payback?

Illustrative case with hypothetical assumptions. Gross returns exclude fees, taxes and transaction costs unless specified.

WORKED CASE 03

Restaurant unit economics

A premium restaurant concept earns $2.8m annual sales per site. Food and paper costs are 31%, labour 29%, occupancy 10%, and other store expenses 13%. New-store buildout costs $1.6m. Estimate four-wall EBITDA margin, cash EBITDA and simple payback.

Four-wall EBITDA margin100% − 31% − 29% − 10% − 13% = 17%
Annual four-wall EBITDA$2.8m × 17% = $476,000
Simple buildout payback$1.6m / $476,000 = 3.36 years
Investment committee challenge

What would a 5% sales decline do to EBITDA if 70% of costs are fixed in the short term?

Illustrative case with hypothetical assumptions. Gross returns exclude fees, taxes and transaction costs unless specified.

WORKED CASE 04

Growth equity dilution and exit

A premium wellness brand has $90m pre-money equity value and raises $30m of primary capital. Five years later, it is sold for $360m equity value. Assume no further dilution or preferences. Calculate the new investor stake, proceeds, MOIC and IRR.

Post-money valuation$90m + $30m = $120m
Investor ownership$30m / $120m = 25%
Investor exit proceeds$360m × 25% = $90m
Gross MOIC$90m / $30m = 3.0×
Five-year gross IRR3^(1/5) − 1 = 24.57%
Investment committee challenge

How would a subsequent financing round and a 10% management option pool change ownership?

Illustrative case with hypothetical assumptions. Gross returns exclude fees, taxes and transaction costs unless specified.

WORKED CASE 05

Retail pricing and gross margin

A specialty retailer sells 1m units at $80 each. Unit COGS is $44. Management raises prices by 8%, and volumes fall 5%; unit COGS is unchanged. Calculate original and new revenue, gross profit and gross margin.

Original revenue1.0m × $80 = $80.0m
Original gross profit1.0m × ($80 − $44) = $36.0m
Original gross margin$36m / $80m = 45.0%
New units1.0m × 95% = 950,000
New unit price$80 × 1.08 = $86.40
New revenue950,000 × $86.40 = $82.08m
New gross profit950,000 × ($86.40 − $44) = $40.28m
New gross margin$40.28m / $82.08m = 49.07%
Investment committee challenge

What if retailer promotions absorb half the list-price increase? What evidence confirms sustainable elasticity?

Illustrative case with hypothetical assumptions. Gross returns exclude fees, taxes and transaction costs unless specified.

WORKED CASE 06

Consumer credit downside

A sponsor-owned consumer services business has $30m EBITDA and $135m first-lien debt. Cash interest is 10% and maintenance capex is $8m. In a downside, EBITDA falls 30% and the enterprise is worth 6.0× downside EBITDA. Ignore cash, taxes and transaction costs. Calculate base leverage, coverage, downside EV and first-lien recovery.

Base debt / EBITDA$135m / $30m = 4.50×
Annual cash interest$135m × 10% = $13.5m
Base EBITDA / cash interest$30m / $13.5m = 2.22×
Downside EBITDA$30m × 70% = $21m
Downside EV$21m × 6.0 = $126m
First-lien recovery$126m / $135m = 93.33%
Illustrative shortfall$135m − $126m = $9m
Investment committee challenge

What would change if there were secured working-capital facilities ranking ahead of the term loan?

Illustrative case with hypothetical assumptions. Gross returns exclude fees, taxes and transaction costs unless specified.
